A Chance to View JKR's "The Tales of Beetle the Bard" in NYC

Nov. 20th, 2007 | 08:17 pm
posted by: ziasudra_fic in nyc_hpslashers

JKR's hand- written and drawn Beetle the Bard will be on display next week at Sotheby's NY. Details are here. Sotheby's is located at 1334 York Ave @ 72nd Street, accessible by the M101L bus or the 6 train. Exhibition dates and times are as follows:

Mon, 26 Nov 07, 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM
Tue, 27 Nov 07, 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM
Wed, 28 Nov 07, 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM

There will also be a commemorative catalogue/book on sale that talks about JKR's making of the book.

I'm planning to take a quick trip to Sotheby's Monday afternoon. Anyone interested to come with?

ETA: For anyone still considering to go, the tentative plan is to meet at Sotheby's around 2:30 p.m. on Monday, November 26. We're doing the "let's find each other there" method so look for a short Asian girl in back striped slacks and a wine-colored red top if you happen to be there.

Cosplay in NYC

Oct. 29th, 2007 | 10:09 pm
location: Work
mood: busybusy
music: Journey Man
posted by: paranoidsistah in nyc_hpslashers

Hey All, long time no post. But I wanted to let you all know about this cool event happening on Saturday. Here are the details:

The New York Anime Festival (NYAF) today announced a Cosplay Day to celebrate the opening of Kinokuniya Bookstore's new flagship store in New York City. On Saturday, November 3, any patron dressed in costume who visits the Kinokuniya Bookstore at 1073 Avenue of the Americas (between 40th and 41st Streets) from 10 AM to 8 PM will receive a 10% discount off all anime and manga purchases and be entered into a raffle to win one of 10 complimentary weekend passes to the New York Anime Festival. In addition, the first 500 cosplayers will all take home a gift bag courtesy of VIZ Media.

I'm definitely going(more than likely as L from Death Note(the dark haired guy in my icon) or some random Slytherin). It would be great to go as part of a group, though, I would love to meet for lunch with some peeps since I'll be in the city, regardless of whether yall come to the cosplay event or not.

Anyways, let me know if you are interested and we can set something up. :)

otw_news Halloween Fundraiser in NYC

Oct. 15th, 2007 | 06:42 pm
posted by: ziasudra_fic in nyc_hpslashers

Since we're not having a Halloween party this year, you might want to think about attending this one, organized by people over at Organization for Transformative Works, a soon-to-be non-profit group seeking to create a fannish archive of our very own (see otw_news for more info).

There is suggested donation to attend, but it really isn't that much more than the amount we spent on all the booze last year ;)

Also, since this event will run late-ish, if anyone thinks they need a place to stay overnight, my place is open for crashing until all the spots are taken.

And now the 411 of the event:

Meetup with other HP folks at an event in Edison?

Jeff Mach's Labyrinth

Hello, everyone! I posted to hp_nj some time ago and realized it might be worthwhile asking here as well. From September 28-29th, an event will be happening in Edison, NJ called Jeff Mach's Wicked Labyrinth, and it might be a wonderful place for a meetup. A good number of people helping to create it are slashers of one sort, or another. *raises hand* And many of them are into HP slash. *raises hand again* What does this mean for everyone?

We're trying to make this into as much of a geeky, fan-friendly event as possible. We're having a game called Slash: the RPG there with, you guessed it, slash! The above banner refers to that. There'll be gaming, Pocky, anime, movie screenings, a Rocky Horror Puppet Show, music concerts, story read-alouds, a Buffy musical sing-along, networking for artists/writers/cartoonists, a Cthulhu LARP, good food and interesting vendors, a lot of people running around wearing costumes or garb, and a lot more. It's an amalgamation, a mixture of Renaissance faire, convention and festival.

Admittedly, I've not been to any conventions myself, unless a shoebox_project meetup a few years ago counts. I'm not certain how they run. But we're offering an entire hotel's worth of entertainment. If people want to go in groups and share hotel rooms, or find ways of getting to the event, more information is available on the website, along with details about the event, pricing, etc.

Would you be interested in going to this, as an HP meetup, or individually? It'd be awesome to have another HP meetup, where fans can talk about the aftermath of the seventh book while enjoying themselves. We want you there. We want to work with you to make this interesting and exciting. And the more HP fans (and slashers in general) that go, the more interesting it gets. And, frankly? The more slashers that go, the greater the chances of convincing the great and powerful Jeff Mach of reading that long Snape/Harry story I've wanted to show him. :)

Update on Union Square B&N

Just a heads up for those of you planning to attend the Union Square Barnes and Nobles Magical Night event tonight. I was walking past Union Square this morning at 6:45 a.m., and already there’s a line of people camped out in front of the bookstore. As the day progresses, there’ll probably be much more people joining the already-sizeable queue. So a word of advice: get there early!

Does anybody know if there are tickets or any other sort of reservations required for the Jim Dale event at Union Square? My coworker wants to bring her son but she is trying to figure out the timing.

Final Details for Manhattan Pre-Book Party Get-Together

Jul. 18th, 2007 | 11:06 am
posted by: ziasudra_fic in nyc_hpslashers

Some final details about meeting up near Union Square/Books of Wonder on Friday night, before I start hiding from the Internets:

Date: July 20, 2007 (Friday)
Time: 6 p.m. to around 8 or 8:30 p.m.
Location: ziasudra's apartment. I will be emailing exact directions to those of you who responded to the poll.

We will gather for a quick dinner and hopefully listen to JKR's reading via streaming video starting 7 p.m. Then we'll get ourselves organized and head toward whichever book release party we're planning to attend.

On Saturday morning, those who have a ticket to Mary GrandPre's book signing at Books of Wonder will need to get there early (see Web site/poster for more info). While the bookstore itself doesn't open until 11 a.m. on weekends, I plan to get there between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. with my cousin, so look for me in the line if you'll be there too. Depending on our moods, we can head to lunch together in/around Union Square after the signing.

Important weather note: rain is in the forecast, so please bring your umbrellas/rain coats/ponchos.

Three more days! :D

Getting Together on July 20

Jul. 15th, 2007 | 02:45 pm
posted by: ziasudra in nyc_hpslashers

Less than a week until Deathly Hallows! :D

Most of us seem to have ordered our books around three main locations: Union Square B&N, Books of Wonder, and Long Island. So I made a poll, hoping it would help facilitate any pre-midnight release get-together. It's free for all -- you see someone getting their book at the same place as yours, feel free to arrange something with them.

For those of you who prefer set plans, I do have one get-together idea: I live 10-15 minutes' walk away from Union Square, and 15-20 minutes' walk from Books of Wonder. I plan to be home from work by 6 p.m. on the 20th, and anyone is welcome to stop by my apartment for dinner (it'll most likely be take-out/delivery) and/or listening to JKR's reading until we need to head to our respective book parties. For HBP, I arrived Books of Wonder at around 9 p.m. I plan to do something similar this time.

My apartment's open whether only 1 of you decide to show up or if 10 of you do, just be sure to let me know ahead of time so I know to expect you.

Now onto the poll...

Poll #1021879 July 21 Getting-My-Book Poll (no spoilers)

I will be getting my book at:

Books of Wonder
6(54.5%)
Union Square Barnes & Nobles
1(9.1%)
Long Island
2(18.2%)
Other
2(18.2%)

If other, where?

I'm interested in getting together around 6-ish at a place near Union Square/Books of Wonder

Yes
4(44.4%)
No
2(22.2%)
Maybe
3(33.3%)

If yes or maybe: I'm going to want to listen to JKR's reading of DH via streaming video, starting 7 p.m. EST. (Meaning: I don't mind ordering take-out dinner delivery so I can listen to JKR in the comfort of someone's apartment.)

Yes
3(60.0%)
No
0(0.0%)
Something else I'll tell you in the comments
2(40.0%)

book parties?

Jul. 13th, 2007 | 10:41 am
posted by: girlandetc in nyc_hpslashers

so it seems everyone is kind of divided on where to go for the book release. i went to the union square barnes and noble party last year, and it was pretty enjoyable, esp. the reading, but there were a ton of kids there. this year they are going to have another reading by jim dale and the costume contest of course. i'm not sure where i should plan to go this year. it looks like books of wonder is really only just a few blocks away from b&n union square, so it would really be feasible to hit both - be at b&n for the reading or what not and then back to books of wonder for the books? is anyone else dressing up?

i'm elyse, btw :) i've been in college upstate but i just got an internship here (as i did last summer) so i am here for at least the summer. hi!
